Prayer & Fasting Guide

Why We Fast

Fasting is more than giving up food—it’s about drawing near to God with hunger for Him above all else. Throughout Scripture, God’s people fasted to:
– Seek God’s direction (Ezra 8:21–23; Acts 13:2–3)
– Repent and humble themselves (Joel 2:12–13; Jonah 3:5–10)
– Intercede for others (Esther 4:16; Daniel 9:3–19)
– Deepen dependence on God (Matthew 4:1–4)

Purpose of fasting: to weaken the pull of the flesh and strengthen the pursuit of the Spirit. It creates space for prayer, worship, and hearing God’s voice more clearly.

The Heart of Fasting

• Fasting without prayer is just a diet.
• God isn’t impressed with how much we deny ourselves, but with how much we lean into Him (Isaiah 58:6–9).
• The goal isn’t simply to abstain—it’s to feast on God’s presence, His Word, and His Spirit.

How to Prepare

1. Set your purpose – Why are you fasting? Revival? Clarity? Intercession?
2. Decide the type & length – Be realistic; choose with prayer.
3. Plan your prayer time – Replace meals or distractions with Scripture, worship, and intercession.
4. Expect resistance – Spiritual breakthrough often comes with spiritual pushback.

Scripture Meditations During Fasting

– Joel 2:12–13 – “Return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
– Matthew 6:16–18 – Jesus teaches the right heart posture for fasting.
– Isaiah 58 – The kind of fast God chooses: to loose chains of injustice and bring freedom.
– Acts 13:2–3 – The early church fasted before sending out missionaries.

Types of Fasts

1. Complete Fast

Abstaining from all food, taking only liquids (water, juice, broth). Biblical example: Esther called for this fast before going to the king (Esther 4:16).

2. Partial Fast (Daniel Fast)

Restricting certain foods (usually meat, sweets, bread, or rich foods) while eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, and water. Based on Daniel 1:12 and Daniel 10:3.

3. Intermittent / Time-Restricted Fast

Skipping one or two meals daily and dedicating that time to prayer. Often used as a rhythm during longer fasting seasons.

4. Soul Fast

Abstaining from things that consume your attention (social media, TV, gaming, unnecessary spending, etc.). Helpful for those with health limitations, or to detox from cultural noise.

Closing Encouragement

Fasting is a gift, not a burden. As we fast, we’re joining generations of believers who hungered more for God than for food. Let’s lean into prayer, Scripture, and worship, trusting that God will meet us in fresh ways!
